Get Started

The Road Safety Professional (RSP) course prepares engineers and specialists to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to analyze traffic safety issues and develop effective solutions in accordance with international standards and practices, with systematic preparation to pass the RSP1 exam. The content is based on the Road Safety Fundamentals (RSF) book and the Highway Safety Manual (HSM) as a scientific basis for making quantifiable safety decisions.

Target audience

  • Traffic and Safety Engineers
  • Road design and maintenance engineers
  • Project managers and safety management
  • Operations and Maintenance Supervisors
  • Occupational Safety and Health Officers in Road Projects
  • Traffic Safety Consultants and Consulting Offices
  • Researchers and academics in transportation and safety

Learning Objectives

By the end of the RSP course, the trainee will be able to:

  • Analyze incident data and performance indicators and identify priority locations for remediation. (HSM methodologies)
  • Applying RSF principles: Nominal versus substantive safety, the role of human behavior, and comprehensive safety management frameworks.
  • Design strategic, evidence-based safety programs, develop actionable recommendations and measure their impact. highways.dot.gov
  • Systematic preparation to pass the RSP1 (Road Safety Professional Foundation Level) exam.

Course Themes (6 sections = 16 lessons)

Section I: Introduction to the course (Lesson 1)

  • Introduction to the field of road safety, RSP certification definition and pathways, exam requirements and career benefits.

Section II: Artistic Approach (6 lessons)

  1. Road safety fundamentals: RSF concepts, nominal/essential safety, 4E's (engineering, awareness, enforcement, response).
  2. Human behavior and risk factors: Characteristics of road users, causes and severity of accidents, proactive prevention.
  3. Data and safety indicators: Data sources, data quality, indicators, heat maps. (RSF approach)
  4. Problem solving methodologies: Identifying locations with the highest potential to reduce incidents, selecting treatments, estimating impact. (HSM)
  5. Strategic programs and plans: Pillars, objectives, performance indicators, periodic evaluation.
  6. Legislation and standards: Framework of reference, professional accreditation practices and recognized preparatory courses.

Section III: Review and Evaluation (2 lessons)

  1. Comprehensive review (1): Question bank, RSF/HSM concepts, application scenarios.
  2. Advanced Review (2): Focus on behavioral and management areas that appear on the RSP. TPCB exams

Section IV: Books and References (3 lessons)

  1. Road Safety Fundamentals (RSF) explanation: Foundation modules, application examples, and quizzes. highways.dot.gov
  2. Highway Safety Manual (HSM)-Practical Part: Positioning, estimating performance, selecting treatments.
  3. Supportive learning resources: ITE/TPCB approved web materials and review courses.

Section V: Road Safety in Saudi Vision 2030 (Lesson 1)

  1. Alignment of national targets: Link RSF/HSM principles to mortality and injury reduction targets and sectoral performance indicators.

Section VI: Practice Tests (4 lessons)

  1. Trial Test (1)

  2. Practice Test (2)

  3. Practice Test (3)

  4. Pilot test (4 & 5)-model correction with justification of answers and linking to official references (RSF/HSM and RSP resources). ITE

Recommended Study Plan to Pass RSP1
